Operanation Celebrates 10th Anniversary with a Sold-Out Event Raising Over $130,000 for COC’s Ensemble Studio
The Canadian Opera Company’s annual fundraiser and North America’s largest opera party, Operanation, commemorated its
milestone 10th anniversary on October 24, 2013. Raising over $130,000 for the COC’s Ensemble Studio, Canada’s premier training program for young opera professionals, the sold-out event was attended by over 1,000 arts patrons, notable VIPs and party-goers. Operanat10n: A Night of Temptation is being heralded as the best Operanation party to-date, with this year’s theme, temptation, translating into elements of music, fashion, artistry and food throughout the expansive Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. “Operanation has become one of Toronto's most highly anticipated parties of the year, as we continue to bring the best artists from Canada’s rock, pop and indie musical genres together with tomorrow’s opera stars,” says Alexander Neef, General Director of the Canadian Opera Company. “In celebrating our 10th Operanation, and with the recent announcement of the inaugural Centre Stage competition gala this November, we’re fostering the future of opera in this country. Through both events we’re able to reach a whole new audience and connect them with the COC as well as the rising opera talent being developed in Canada."
Rock x Opera: Sam Roberts Band Collaborates with Ambur Braid
Operanat10n: A Night of Temptation featured an incredible, never-before-heard, rock-meets-opera performance of Bridge to Nowhere by Canadian rock icons Sam Roberts Band and veteran Operanation performer, COC Ensemble Studio alumna soprano Ambur Braid. Guests sang along with the award-winning band to a number of fan favourites, including Brother Down and Hard Road. Sam Roberts Band is slated to release its highly anticipated sixth studio album, Lo-Fantasy, in February 2014.
A Night of Temptation
Operanat10n cascaded through three storeys of the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, with tempting surprises around every corner. Among the evening’s activations was the unveiling of an experimental video installation by artist Jon Sasaki, incorporating the vocal talents of the COC Ensemble Studio and members of the COC Chorus. This year’s fashion element was a collaborative high-end fashion tee from New York-based label KAELEN and Sam Roberts Band. The tee was showcased at the foot of the opera house’s grand staircase and found interspersed among the evening’s best-dressed party guests. These limited-edition tees continue to be available for purchase online at the COC Opera Shop for $100. All proceeds will go to the COC Ensemble Studio.
This year’s caterer, 10tation, served up delicious treats with guests indulging in a bountiful macaroni and cheese bar, bite-sized chicken and waffles and an interactive black forest cake station. Further enticing guests was Trius Wines, who awed party-goers with their chilling ice sculpture and Golden Brut – ice wine sent through a luge and infused with Brut. On the third floor of the Four Seasons Centre, Calvin Klein models distributed samples of the latest CK scent, DOWNTOWN, while guests struck a pose in the Toronto Life Photostar picture booth.
The event was studded with notable television, music, media and Toronto personalities including Sam Roberts (Sam Roberts Band) and Brendan Canning (Broken Social Scene), TV personalities Jian Ghomeshi (CBC’s Q), Eli Glasner (CBC), David Sutcliffe (CBC’s Cracked) and Aliya-Jasmine Sovani (MTV’s Play With AJ), designers Kaelen Haworth (KAELEN), Glenn and David Dixon, and Jeremy Laing, as well as socialite Suzanne Rogers and model Stacey McKenzie.
Event co-chairs Anne Maggisano, Burgundy Asset Management, Amy Burstyn-Fritz, director of Knot PR, and Jeffrey Remedios, president of Arts & Crafts, helped announce the musical talent and draw the coveted raffle prizes that included a $5,000 gift card to The Room, an autographed KAELEN X Sam Roberts Band Operanation Tee, a night at the opera for four in the Royal Box and dinner at Drake One Fifty, and two gala dinner tickets to the COC’s inaugural Centre Stage: Ensemble Studio Competition Gala.
