Joan J. Guillén


Spanish set and costume designer Joan Guillén makes his COC debut with La Cenerentola. He is a cartoonist, set designer and a tutor for the School of Dramatic Art at the Institut del Teatre, Barcelona, where he teaches character design courses, theatre masque and stage set design. In 1999, Mr. Guillén received the Gold Medal in Costume Design at the Prague Quadrennial for Theatre Architecture and Set Design. Recent projects include The Magic Flute at Gran Teatre del Liceu, La Cenerentola for Houston Grand Opera, Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, Grand Théâtre de Genève, Gran Teatre del Liceu and Welsh National Opera; L’Italiana in Algeri for Teatro Real Madrid, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Opéra national de Bordeaux, and Houston Grand Opera; and, Balada’s Faust-Bal at Teatro Real Madrid. Mr. Guillén also works in illustration, etching and sculpture. As a satirical cartoonist, his work has appeared in Spain’s most important newspapers and magazines and on television stations in Catalonia. He was honoured with the Award of the City of Barcelona in 1983 and 1985 for achievements in journalism.
