Director David Alden transports us into the darkly brooding world of Sir Walter Scott’s iconic Gothic novel. A fragile girl, barely a woman, is treated as little more than chattel within a brutal, power-driven society. She ultimately finds release – but only after severing all ties with reality, escaping into the dream world offered by Donizetti’s cascading romantic melodies.
This brilliant production was created for, and stars, Anna Christy. “Christy’s Lucia...is subtle, clear, immensely powerful, but never overbearing. Her coloratura voice is so perfectly controlled that we stopped listening for its pyrotechnics, and just concentrated on its drama and artistry.”
On stage at the Four Seasons Centre, 145 Queen St. W., Toronto. Performance time is approximately two hours, 40 minutes including one intermission. Sung in Italian with English SURTITLES™.
